Volunteer Background Check Fee to Remain at $25 Through End of 2018
The Polk County School Board has decided that the fee to cover volunteers’ background checks, as well as their badge and handbook, will remain $25 through the end of the calendar year.
Polk County Public Schools will be using more extensive volunteer background checks as part of our security measures to protect students and staff. The district will incur an additional charge for the statewide and national background checks.
However, through the end of 2018, the cost to volunteers will remain $25. We are exploring other funding sources to help offset the cost of background screening for volunteers on an ongoing basis. More information will follow.

School Volunteer Background Check Fees to Increase
At the end of 2018, the price for Polk County Public Schools volunteer background checks will increase from $25 to $40.
To coincide with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, we’re tightening security measures to protect our students, faculty and staff. The increased price for background checks will include: a national background check, Social Security number verification, address verification, multiple name/alias check and terror watch list check.
Volunteers are required to reapply and renew their background check every five years from the date of their application approval.
As a benefit of the new system coming in November, volunteers will be able to apply and make payments online, and the application process will be faster and more efficient.
For now, those wishing to become an approved volunteer should visit www.polkschoolsfl.com/getinvolved, print an application, fill it out, and submit it to the school where you would like to volunteer.

KES Volunteer Program
Kathleen Elementary is proud of the School Advisory Council, PTO, and volunteer program. These programs offer an exciting and rewarding opportunity for parents and the community to be involved in children’s education. School volunteers enhance the quality of the school’s environment. There are many ways to be involved. Volunteers are needed to, chaperone field trips, serve as guest speakers, tutor students, or assist with clerical duties. Kathleen Elementary hosts many special events: Book Fairs, Read Aloud Day, Young Authors Conference, Walk-a-thon, fundraising, and the yearbook. These events require the helping hands of caring volunteers. Please contact the school for approval status, training, and opportunities.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at our school, you must first fill out an online application and be approved by the district.
KES honors our awesome volunteers each year at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Our 2017-2018 Volunteer of the Year was Mrs. Melissa Bywalski. “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!” It is with the help of our volunteers that we are able to do so many of the great things that we do at KES! Thank you for your dedication and service to our students.
